Today, Visa Inc. and Visa Europe are separate, independently operating companies that are mutually invested in each others success to ensure brand integrity.
Visa Inc. is an American multinational financial services corporation headquartered in Foster City, California, United States. It facilitates electronic funds transfers throughout the world, most commonly through Visa-branded credit and debit cards. Visa is not a card issuer, nor do they extend credit or set rates and fees for consumers. Visa provides financial institutions with Visa-branded payment products that they then use to extend credit, and issue debit, prepaid and other cash-access programs to their customers.
Visa lauched in 1958 under the name BankAmericard and since that time has become a global payment mechanism. According to The Nilson Report (2008), Visa held a 38.3% market share of the credit card marketplace and 60.7% of the debit card marketplace in the United States. In 2009, Visa’s global network (known as VisaNet) processed 62 billion transactions with a total volume of $4.4 trillion.
Visa is the most popular form of online payment today with 1.9 billion cards in circulation, and is accepted in over 200 countries and territories.
